Marlborough Vs North Somerset Marlborough win 2-1
After another cancelled game due to the weather Marlborough looked to their rearranged fixture with North Somerset to continue their Minehead momentum. The previous day North had beaten top of the table Chippenham so Marlborough knew that they would be in for a tight and feisty game having also lost to North on the previous meeting.
The tactics from both sides seemed pretty clear from the off. North looked to power the ball through sticks and throwing the ball in to spaces for their forwards to run on to whilst Marlborough were more content with more patient build up play down both flanks.
Marlborough started the brighter of the two sides and were soon looking dangerous after several quick attacks and possession turnovers. Sadly the home side were not able to capitalise and this led to North settling in to the game more and creating some opportunities of their own.
The game looked to be heading to half time with the scores locked at 0-0 until an momentary lapse by Marlborough allowed the North strikers in for a well taken goal against he run of play. Could Marlborough recover?
The second half began with Marlborough dominant in possession and being to contain the opposition when they broke through. Resolute, strong defending allowed Marlborough to build from the back and soon they were being awarded short corners on a regular basis, time to convert! Mid way through the second half Marlborough levelled after a short corner routine rebound which saw captain Rich Holman deftly place his shot over a North players stick.
Marlborough looked like the most likely team to score from there on in and soon took the lead when Holman scored his second of the game with a thunderous reverse stick strike following another short corner break down. A definite goal of the season contender- simply sublime.
North pressed forward with everything they had left but were unable to find an equaliser despite causing Marlborough the odd difficult moment. The game ended 2-1 with Marlborough back up in to 4th place and with a game in hand perhaps anything is possible?
