Marlborough vs Somerset Gryphons Marlborough win 4-2
Would the weekend be a complete disaster? Marlborough needed to show their metal and desire to come back from a devastating defeat the previous day. From the first minute it seemed that Marlborough had more all around desire and willingness to work than they had shown against Firebrands and soon they were in the ascendancy constantly hassling their opponents and not allowing them to settle.
The first Marlborough goal arrived when captain Rich Holman unleashed a short corner strike which nigh on broke the backboard. Some of the previous days frustration evident in the strike. Shortly after Gryphons found themselves on level terms rather against the run of play. A wild, speculative ball was thundered in to the ‘d’ which after taking a wicked deflection from a Marlborough stick found its way past scrambling goalkeeper Jon Stevens. In a frantic end to the first half Marlborough retook the lead when Holman turned provider with a fierce slider pass which was deflected in to the Gryphons goal by Anil Sud.
The tension was clearly rising in both sides as the tackles became rather wild on occasion and Marlborough forward Steve Way was sin binned for foul language. Marlborough’s third goal was scored by Sud following a quick breakaway with some well timed passes. Not happy with their lead Marlborough pressed further to put the game to bed and Way made amends for his earlier indiscretion by being in the right place and the right time to deflect Marlborough’s foruth in to the Gryphons net.
To their credit Gryphons fought hard and picked up a goal with 2 minutes to play and put Marlborough under pressure for the remainder of the game. The final whistle blew with Marlborough delighted at having picked themselves up following the disappointment of the day before.
