Momentum? what momentum?!

Marlborough vs North Somerset Marlborough lose 6-3
After a rousing start to the season the previous week Marlborough travelled away to Gordano for their fixture with newly promoted North Somerset. These are the kinds of games essentially to building momentum if Marlborough were going to challenge for a promotion place this year.
The game began in lively fashion with Marlborough dominating possession and creating several openings following good use of their defensive press, unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on any of them. North Somerset sprang to life sensing their opponents were not quite at the races and soon created several chances of their own following several quick counter attacking moves.
North deservedly took the lead by battling harder and seemingly wanting the game more than the visitors. They soon doubled their lead to leave Marlborough stunned and shocked at 2-0 down. In a desperate bid to get back in to the game before half time Marlborough threw all of the resources forward and soon pulled a goal back after a quick counter of their own and a well placed shot from debutant Niko Martin. Just prior to half time Marlborough levelled the scoring through an Anil Sud short corner strike.
With the game seemingly there for the taking for both sides the second half began in earnest. The game seemed to be following the same patterns as before, Marlborough dominated possession and were unable to break through and North Somerset played on the counter attack. North once again took the lead which Marlborough once again answered this time through skipper Rich Holman’s trademark short corner ‘slider’.
Despite having drawn level Marlborough looked the less comfortable of the two sides and North took full advantage of their opponents weakness by scoring another 2 quick goals making the score 5-3. Desperate to try and stay in the game Marlborough attempted to press further up the pitch but a lack of communication, basic execution of passing and trapping left them out of time and staring a hugely disappointing defeat in the face.
North completed Marlborough’s miserable afternoon by scoring a short corner with the final play of the game. The score line read 6-3 at the close, a deserved win for the home side and leaving Marlborough with a huge amount to think about and apply to their mid week training.
The Marlborough News Online man of the match award was given to Anil Sud.
