Marlborough vs Yeovil & Sherborne Marlborough lose 4-0
After a resounding victory the previous week Marlborough travelled to Yeovil for another top of the table clash with hopes of continuing their good form.
The game began with Yeovil taking the initiative and trying to assert themselves on the visitors who seemed somewhat timid and unusually quiet during the opening exchanges. However soon Marlborough worked their way in to the game with their defensive press working very well which led to Yeovil opting for long hopeful balls to their forward line.
As the game opened up further both sides enjoyed more time on the ball and this is where to home side began to thrive. Shorter more precise passing created space in the Marlborough defence and Yeovil had several good attempts on goal which were only thwarted by Marlborough goalkeeper Brian Marnane. Marlborough held strong under the pressure and had several dangerous counter attacks of their own but were unable to find the free man in the last instance.
The deadlock was finally broken when Yeovil took the lead after another quick attack and resulting scramble for the ball inside the ‘d’. Could Marlborough mount a second half comeback?
Marlborough started the second half in a much more lively fashion, pressing their opponents harder and forcing them to take more chances with their play. The game continued in much the similar cagey way until Yeovil broke free with an incisive move down the right hand side and with a striker unmarked in front of goal the outcome was inevitable. 2-0 down and roughly 15 minutes to go Marlborough knew that they didn’t have long left to get themselves back in to the game.
Unfortunately for the visitors this played in to the hands of the home side and they ruthlessly exploited the space left in behind Marlborough and soon the game was all but done when the score was widened to 3-0.
To their credit Marlborough stuck to their task admirably and were awarded several short corners but Yeovil defended well and following a Marlborough attacking break down the home side finished the game off in style with a reverse stick goal from an acute angle.
The game finished 4-0 leaving Marlborough plenty to work on come the next training session. The Marlborough News Online Man of the Match was awarded to Duncan Lorrain who displayed great energy, tenacity and commitment in his work all over the pitch.
