Newent 6 - Marlborough 0

Our travels this week took us to the borders of the Welsh marshes to play Newent. A dominant team featuring strongly in the division we expected a tough opposition.....and we got one. Moving extremely well and with a very well rehearsed team, Newent came out hard and went 2-0 up in the first 10. Marlborough struggled to contend with this. The defence were kept busy with a swarm of attackers in the D. Goal keeper, Vicky Moxham made some great saves and Rachel Cox and Penny Bowen found themselves trying to clear the ball on a regular basis. Unfortunately despite the hard work of the defence Marlborough were 4 nil down by half time.

The second half was a different game; we got our structure back, played a defensive game and played the ball into the space. Catherine Manley and Alex Crosby-Jones were kept on their toes in mid-field, trying to move the ball forward whilst at the same time having to help mark the Newent players coming through the middle. Despite Newent having numerous short corners, they actually only managed to convert one, which is testament to Marlborough's great defence. Having regained composure, the last twenty five minutes of the game saw no goal was conceded. The match finished 6-0 to the home team. We look forward to the re-match in Marlborough in the new year!

The Marlborough News Online Player of the Match was awarded jointly to Vicky Moxham and Penny Bowen.
