Marlborough and Gillingham took to a sub zero, blustery, snowy pitch at the college on St Patrick’s Day for a middle of the table clash.
The conditions didn’t stop either team from entering the battle and both teams were quick from the off. Gillingham managed to find their way through the middle of the field to open up the game with two quick goals. Moxy stayed calm in the 1-1 situations but after multiple saves she couldn’t quite reach these two.
Marlborough weren’t deflated and they maintained most of the possession with quick, precise passing. Annabel Ashley, Amy Davidson and Beth Palfrey utilised the wings and made some great runs using Sophie Fynn and Jess Davis in the middle for some excellent 1-2s. Marlborough spent more and more time in the D and the hard work paid off with a pass from Alice Thompson to Sophie Fynn at the top of the D who passed a player to whip the ball into the back of the net.
Going into half time at 2-1 Marlborough came out positively and again maintained a good amount of possession. Rachel Cox, Emily Carter-Davies and Anna Scott were utilised well in order the recycle the ball but Marlborough struggled to put away a number of good chances. Off a short corner Bella Busby managed to get a deflection to bring the two teams level. Marlborough pushed and pushed and Anna Strover, Tess Christmas, Catherine Manley and Bella Busby making some quick focused runs but couldn’t quite get the final touch. One break from Gillingham caught Marlborough on the back foot and with 4 minutes left the score went to 3-2 Gillingham.
Marlborough did not stop fighting and they were unlucky not to make it a draw. Anna Strover and Rachel Cox received joint Marlborough News Online player of the match, a testimony to the excellent team effort Marlborough put in to the game, never once giving up.
