The whole team were eager to get back out onto the pitch following what felt like a long break from hockey. Having previously lost 9-0 to Bath Bucks earlier in the season we were keen to demonstrate that we had improved and strengthened as a team.
The game started at a quick pace with some good attacking play as the ball was distributed up with wings towards Heather, Verity and Anna on our front line. However we knew it wouldn't be easy to penetrate the Bucks defence who deservedly hold their place near the top of our league.
The game settled into an even affair with attacking opportunities moving from end to end. Chloe and our defensive team kept us in the game with some solid defending and half time arrived with the score still at 0-0.
A rallying team talk gave us the confidence to believe that this game was no longer about damage limitation but rather we should believe that we could win it. Verity provided the break through we needed with a lovely carry of the ball towards the D which was finished off by Meg.
Would we hold our nerve? Some brave defending from Katie, Sarah, Gabby and Alex kept Bath Bucks feeling frustrated. However with less than 10 minutes to go and despite the best efforts of the defensive line, a nicely placed rising shot into the top left corner levelled the score at 1-1. Perhaps a fair score line and certainly one we would have taken at the start of the match.
