As Wootten Bassett were promoted with us, we knew this was going to be a close game. Walking out onto the snow covered pitch we were perhaps a little nervous on how this match would go. But as we began to play, we easily controlled the ball, showing ourselves as the dominating team.
Pressing hard on the attack, we had a couple unfortunate misses, and plenty of short corners awarded to us which were strongly defended by Bassetts goalie. Verity did well to work the ball around the Bassett defence when they were defending compact in the D. Freya and Heather made strong runs down the pitch, picking up the ball and eliminating many of the defence, and it was a shame we couldn’t get a goal after their hard work.
During the second half, the game picked up pace, and we had to work harder in the defence. Sarah and Katie guarded our 23 very well, putting in some great tackles, turning over the ball and making quick decisions during our hit outs. The centre was well controlled by Nyah, Becky, and Louisa. Wootten Bassett did well to mark the central channel but when they weren’t so tight we used this opportunity and attack down the centre. Helena and Gabbie covered the wings, driving Bassetts forwards away from goal and providing support during our attacks.
The goal was watched well by Chloe, who was unafraid to drive and pressure the forwards.
Overall, we played some great hockey considering the conditions, and put in a massive effort. The final score was 0-0, which reflected the game well, it was very close and fought hard over.
Hopefully next week we could get a little less snow.
