As the title suggests, Marlborough 2s set out on yet another wet Saturday to tackle top of the league Chippenham 2. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but knowing that we play our best hockey against the strongest opposition we went out motivated, if a little damp. Chippenham had a strong side an got two early goals against our defence. Undeterred we kept our heads up and fought back, and the remainder of the first half was well balanced. Play moved up and down the pitch with chances at both ends, but no more goals were scored.
The second half started well. Sophie Davis made a great intercept in the left mid-field, passed the ball up to Jamie Parsons on the wing who bounced it in to Verity Langfield in the D. One-on-one with the GK she scored to bring Marlborough back into contention. However, as hard as the team worked we were unable to get any more goals and Chippenham came back at us hard. Two scrappy goals and two great goals, including a flick over the head of GK Edie Bound left the scoreline 6-1 to Chippenham. POTM votes went to the defenders Sarah Kendall and Helena Clarke for their sterling efforts, but overall POTM was defender Beth Palfrey for her countless intercepts in the D.
