A promising start for Marlborough 2s

How great is it to be back on the pitch! After the disruption of the last 18 months it was great to be getting our teeth into the start of the new league season. We were pleased to be welcoming several new players to the squad: Jemima H, Jemima W, Sophie, Liv & Flo, and we certainly needed them!

The ladies 2s started well, putting the pressure on North Wilts for the first few minutes of the match, and some early short corners. However, N Wilts gradually found their shape, and made some great attacking runs through the middle of the pitch. We found ourselves 2 goals down, but gradually refound our shape to finish the second half strong.

Unfortunately mother & daughter duo the Dellars had to leave at half time, leaving a bare 11 players. A bit of restructuring, and we went out in the second half hard. Lou, Penny and Liv found their shape in the middle of the pitch and closed down the opposition midfield, preventing their hard attack that we saw in the first half. Sarah and Sophie were superstars at the back, and Sophie stopped a goal on the line after a clumsy mistake by Lou (thanks Sophie!). Lucy & Jemima H held the lines, defending well and making some great attacking moves up the pitch. And Flo, Tilly & Jemima W looked like a well oiled team up front. A great run by Tilly allowed Jemima W to pounce on a deflection and score our first goal of the season. But the exhilaration was short-lived as N Wilts quickly followed with another goal. But we kept our heads up, and another great run led to a goal from Flo. It was a shame we didn't have a few more minutes to level the score, but overall a very promising start to build on for the rest of the season.
