Marlborough Girls U14s had to drag themselves up earlier on a Sunday than is healthy for a teenager to make it to England via Wales for their first fixture. There still was enough time before the game for the coach to confuse the girls with instructions on short corner rules, long corners and formations. Also left and right.
With only 2 weeks of preparation of playing on a full pitch the girls did a great job on what seems likely to be the last day of summer.
Marlborough were the strongest side in the first half. So much so that Evelyn Hunt in goal didn't have to make a save. The defence of Ella Morriston, Sophia Hodge, Ursula Jeffery and Blythe Clemence kept Lydney out of the D and Evelyn a bit bored!
Meanwhile Marlborough attacked with pace and only last ditch defending, great goalkeeping and a defender's save on the line kept the scores level.
After a few chances Cecily Gates put Marlborough 1-0 from close range on the rebound. This was shortly followed by a great goal as Ella Morriston took a quick free hit deep in her own half, and found Hetty Truman who turned and fed in Anna White. Anna drove into the D and finished into the corner leaving the keeper no chance.
The half finished 2-0 with Marlborough dominant. But naturally Lydney came out in the second half pushing to get back into the game. Marlborough's midfield combination of Freya Henry, captain Abi Lowen, Carys Hughes, Jemima Carroll and Molly Newham worked hard with the defence to keep Lydney at bay. Typical no-holds-barred tackling from Ursula Jeffery was still required when the lines were broken. Sophia Hodge's distribution from the back often found Marlborough's front 3, and great left wing work from Phoebe Rex on the reverse side kept Lydney guessing.
Evelyn was finally called into action who made some good saves but it took until 10 minutes from time before Lydney pulled a goal back with an unstoppable finish into the corner.
However, Marlborough controlled the remainder of the game without too much concern to see out the win.
A great result and this should give the girls lots of confidence for the forthcoming fixtures.
