After a complete freeze out of the whole of the rest of the club over the weekend, Marlborough U10s braved the elements at Dauntseys

Snow on the pitch caused the cancellation of Marlborough’s junior training, and I probably wouldn’t be far off the mark to think that most players and parents were hoping it would be the same at Dauntsey’s. However, metres southwest of Marlborough the snow disappeared and so the hockey was on. Dauntsey’s weren’t without snow, with blizzard conditions through the morning hockey, but none of it settling allowing the hockey to continue.
Marlborough U10s mixed team were struck down losing 5 players in the final hours, leaving only 13 players for the two teams. However, Ted Pearson, there to support his older sister in the U12s was given a stick and so started his hockey career. The fact that he bought his mouthguard obviously showed some enthusiasm.
The rest of the squad were Bear Makin, Willow Booth, Thomas Ingram Hill, Carys Hughes, Charlie Horton, Ollie Jones, Georgina Fry, Max MacLean, Sophia Hodge, Henry Shuttleworth, Reggie Scott-Harden, Anna White and Jess Worrow.
Marlborough Cobras did amazingly well without a goalkeeper, winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 2 of their 5 games. Goals came from Anna White, Henry Shuttleworth, Charlie Horton, and the script was completed when Ted Pearson also scored on his hockey debut!
Marlborough Pythons didn’t lose a game. Admittedly, they drew them all, with goalscoring their Achilles heel and a series of 0-0 draws were separated by a 1-1 against Chippenham. Reggie Scott-Harden scored their only goal with a training ground short corner routine. Jess Worrow had an epic game against Devizes, saving a number of close range shots. Otherwise they defended furiously and on occasion passed the ball fluently up the pitch, but the final shots were often saved on the line.
Considering the weather they played with huge spirit, with not a moan about being cold amongst them. A huge thank you for the parents who braved the snow on the roads and the cold to support the teams. Also to Rich Shuttleworth for running a side. We last played a game of hockey together 17 years ago at Bristol Uni and it was good to fill him in with the ‘new’ rules before the tournament started. Self-pass is a new concept to him!
