Marlborough Vs Mid Somerset Game drawn 0-0
Looking to make a change to their poor away form so far this season Marlborough made the pleasant cross country trip to Wells to face off against Mid Somerset who lay just a couple of points below them.
Marlborough started the game well, controlling the pace of play and having the vast majority of possession highlighted by excellent ball movement throughout the defence and midfield. This calm, collected play led to Mid Somerset being reduced to speculative long ball passes trying to strike the ball past players or using aerial passes in order to try and release some of the pressure build up.
As with the previous week against Firebrands Marlborough struggled to put together the final pass in and around the ‘d’ which led to the break down of several promising attacks. Eventually Marlborough created some clear, open opportunities but were unable to capitalise. The first half ended scoreless with Marlborough having dominated all facets of the game.
The second half began with Marlborough still in the ascendancy, creating space and openings in wide areas of the pitch but unable to find that killer entry ball that would make the vital breakthrough. Having recognised their predicament Somerset packed the defence and midfield, sometimes with 9 players behind the ball in an attempt to suffocate the game. This tactic almost worked on a couple of occasions when a quick outlet ball led to Marlborough goalkeeper Brian Marnane needing to have his wits about him for a couple of fine saves.
Marlborough’s best opportunities of the second half were several crash balls in to the d and a couple of speculative shots from wide angles. The game ended 0-0 with Marlborough feeling like two points had slipped through their fingers.
The Marlborough News Online Man of the Match was Jonty Moore.
