For our first league match in Central 2, the omens were not ideal. A big crash on the M4 resulted in a Cannonball Run-esque chase to the Bristol via various circuitous routes, the majority of the team finally arriving 20 minutes after the allotted start time. As luck would have it, the second umpire had yet to arrive either, so our 11.30PB eventually got underway well after noon.
To the game - we lost 9-0. No hiding from the fact that it was pretty bad.
Here are some observations in no particular order:
- Despite being spanked, the majority consensus was that we actually enjoyed the game a lot.
- Stepping up a league and playing a well drilled 1s team is tough.
- Four of our team were playing 3s last year (including three teenagers), who all acquitted themselves admirably, which bodes very well for the future.
- With a bit more practice and nous (and luck) in the D we could easily have scored three or more goals.
- With a bit more practice and nous (and luck) in the D we could easily have conceded many fewer goals.
- For large portions of the game we competed really very well.
- They were clinical in the final quarter of the pitch.
- Buccs E lost 12-1, so we’re not bottom of the league.
Marlborough News Online Man of the Match goes to Ed Kendall for a very promising performance in his first league match for the 2s.
