A strong start from North Wilts saw Marlborough three goals down early on, a slightly disorganised defence leaving Selwyn Lilley exposed in goal. After the relatively early arrival of Rob Pickford,20 minutes after pushback, the defence rallied and found their structure although North Wilts slipped another three goals in before half time. Marlborough had a few chances in attack with Justin Metcalfe staying high as a lone attacker. He always seemed to be facing at least two defenders and was unable to convert any of the chances. After an inspiring half time talk from the captain (and a few others), Marlborough took to the pitch with morale high and determined to salvage something from the game. Having won a penalty corner, David Patterson injected then glided across to the post and slapped the passed ball in from a narrow angle to score, best worked goal of the season so far. With close chances for Steven Bishop and Ed Kendall, Marlborough were unlucky not to get another goal, although the opposition managed another two to give a final result of 8-1. Unfortunately, this result put us at the bottom of the table on goal difference, next week we face the only other team still on zero points so may manage a draw at least!
