This Saturday, Marlborough ladies 1s faced unbeaten side Salisbury. After a positive team chat where Marlborough we’re ready to show Salisbury what they’re made of. The target for the first ten minutes was not to concede, which the team did amazingly, keeping possession of the ball with short passes and defenders Emily Carter-Davies and Anna Scott making some great tackles to halt the Salisbury attack. Some attacking runs made by Milly Dawson and Anna Strover put pressure on Salisbury’s defence almost resulting in goals. After about 25 minutes Marlborough was caught when a player was unmarked on the top of the D resulting in a goal. 1-0 to Salisbury.
With Marlborough still in high spirits eager for a goal. They kept the pressure high. But a sweep from a Salisbury attacker saw the ball slotted right in the corner. 2-0 to Salisbury. Kitty Cleaver and Rachel Cox held the middle, distributing the ball out from the congested middle until the half time whistle.
After half time Marlborough were hungry for a goal and didn't want their great work rate to go to waste. Salisbury continued to attack at speed but Amy Davidson, Annabel Ashley and Beth Palfrey put in strong tackles and did not let them through. A sideline aerial from Emily Carter-Davies found Rachel Cox who met the stick of Jess Davis who drove to the goal and pushed it in the corner. 2-1, Marlborough were back in it.
As Salisbury began to tire Marlborough kept attacking with Alice Thompson executing some amazing passes and tackles. After continued pressure in Salisbury’s D Rachel Cox had a clean shot on goal and buried it in the corner. 2-2, what a great comeback!!
The rest of the match saw Marlborough and Salisbury desperate for a final goal; but with crucial saves from Issy Davies, neither side saw a goal. The final whistle and Marlborough were ecstatic after a great team performance and for the 1st team in the league to take some points from Salisbury!
Man of the Match went to Alice Thompson and Anna Strover who both had an amazing work rate and created some great play!!
