A strong performance against top team Devizes

Saturday saw the Ladies 2’s at home to top of the league Devizes. Following the away loss at Salisbury the team were keen to put on a strong performance. Devizes had come hoping for an easy win.

From the first blow of the whistle the ladies were on the front foot, attacking well down the right side. Though the team was in its 17th variation of players they were all linking together well and pressing into the Devizes half, a number of opportunities followed but without a resulting goal. Unfortunately Devizes got a break and space in the D to score their 1st goal. Marlborough re grouped and continued to work hard denying Devizes the ability to dominate. Another Devizes attack resulted in their second goal.

Half time beckoned and with the team chat on the positive performance and the marshmallow sugar hit firing everyone up the second half continued with the team playing well together and keeping Devizes out of the danger areas. The game flowed back and forth until Devizes scored their 3rd goal. However Marlborough were not going to let the game get away from them and attacked hard from the restart. With pressure on the Devizes D a number of shot corners were awarded and eventually the work rate was rewarded with a goal! 3-1 there was no stopping the team now. The pressure continued, the defence keeping Devizes at bay and winning the ball to attack back quickly. Another battle in the D and the 2nd goal was scored. Marlborough restarted strongly, hoping a draw could be achieved. The final whistle blew too soon, but the Ladies left the pitch knowing they had played there best hockey against a strong Devizes team.
