With a team of lots of up and coming players, the “’new” 2nd XI played an away fixture against a very strong Wootton Bassett Ladies 2s. The score line didn’t do justice to some of the hockey played, particularly in the second half of the game. With 4 goals in the first half, all from short corners, a lesser team might have let their heads drop, but not this team. The young team (with a few oldies for good measure) came out fighting and conceded just three more goals in the second half. Bea Spence, doing some fine runs with her younger sister Lottie (who was making her ladies debut), was lucky not to score off several great shots on goal. The defence had found their footing and votes for player of the match were cast around half of the team however with votes for Bea Spence, Louisa Gostling, Shahla Davidson, Evie Williams and Sophie Davidson. Player of the match however, with 7 votes, went very deservedly to Emma Davies in goal who, despite the score line, played some fabulous hockey with summer coaching paying off as she dived time and time again to save Wootton Bassett’s unrelenting shots on goal. Early days but some really promising hockey starting to show through. With a similar line out for next week against Swindon, it promises to be a good game.
